PROJECT TITLE

Project Overview

For this historic house in DC’s Shaw neighborhood, we were tasked with reconfiguring a previously cramped and underutilized kitchen and dining room. Combining both rooms into one, and tying the new space together with bold emerald floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, we were able to give our clients much more storage than they had and create a more social space to better fit the way they live and entertain.

Design + Layout

The existing space featured a small kitchen, which was walled off from the dining room and rest of the house. Being both uninviting and difficult to access, the homeowners struggled to take full use of the space. We removed the wall separating the kitchen and dining room, replaced the exterior window and door, and reconfigured the appliance and cabinet layout to build a more useful kitchen, complete with an island and breakfast bar, dry bar, and illuminated floating shelves for extra stylish storage.

Style + Finishes

The classic black and white of the floor tile and countertops and ceiling is illuminated by the bold dark green cabinetry surrounding the room. On the wall opposite the sink, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry gives way in the center making way for stained walnut floating shelves and the exposed brick of the row home’s shared wall. Striking modern lighting and subtle shaker-esque cabinet doors update an antiquated style, situating the kitchen firmly in the present day, without compromising its historic roots.
